What is Fort Victor-Emmanuel
Fort Victor-Emmanuel steps down the slope above the Arc gorge at Aussois, part of the Esseillon barrier: five Sardinian forts built in the early 19th century to guard against French invasion. Constructed to house a garrison of 1,500 men, it is the centrepiece of the ensemble.
Access is free, year-round, every day — the Aussois tourist office publishes it exactly so. Free wandering inside the fort takes in the parade ground, the chapel, the bread ovens and the penitentiary. Group visits can be arranged on request.
One sourced winter caveat: the access road is closed to traffic depending on snow conditions. The fort then remains reachable on foot or on snowshoes.
