What is Tignes

Tignes is '5 villages nestled between 1,550 m and 2,100 m' — Val Claret, le Lac, le Lavachet, Tignes 1800, les Brévières — beneath the Grande Motte glacier. The domain linked with Val d'Isère lines up '300 km of runs' over some 10,000 hectares. On its own bounds the official site hesitates: 'stretching between 1,550 m and 3,450 m' on the ski-area page, 'between 1,550 m and 3,456 m' on the homepage — we quote both, as we do tignes.net's '74 lifts' against valdisere.com's '71'.

For beginners, 'secured zones have been specially laid out' with 'gentle, free lifts'; for getting around, 'free shuttles run all day at regular intervals, summer and winter alike', between the villages and on to Val d'Isère. Off the slopes the resort plays a singular hand: ice diving, speed riding, winter mountaineering, the Tignespace complex, the Lagon aquatic centre and the La Banquise snow village.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When does Tignes open?

From 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027 — among Savoie's first openings, ramping up progressively; the Val d'Isère link opens from 28 November, snow permitting.

3,450 m or 3,456 m? 71 or 74 lifts?

The official pages disagree: the domain's high point is given as '3,450 m' (ski-area page) and '3,456 m' (homepage); lifts as '74' (tignes.net) and '71' (valdisere.com). We quote each version.
